Women's Burgundy Velvet and Sand Satin Jacquard Colonial Dress
Women's Burgundy Velvet and Sand Satin Jacquard Colonial Dress
Description
Description
In the 18th century, the United States was in the midst of its colonial period — a time that captured great diversity in fashion and clothing. Upper class American women enjoyed importing fine fabrics from around the world, crafting elegant gowns with eye-catching detail. Though comfort was necessary as women worked in their homes, even the most average of colonial dresses were layered, lined, and frilled.
During America’s colonial years in the 1700s, women’s fashion varied greatly. What a woman wore depended on both her status and her daily life. Puritan women favored plain, undecorated, and colorless attire. Yet many colonial women wanted to emulate the bright, colorful, and fancy attire popular in England at the time. Women whose husbands were of great importance, or those attending balls, parties, or important events would trade in plain dresses for beautiful satin dresses featuring full skirts, long sleeves, and shining decorative accents. Also referred to as gowns, the popular women’s dress style of the 18th century included a bodice, a skirt atop layers of petticoats, and details like ruffles, lace, and bell sleeves. Typically covered in dresses that touched the ground, colonial fashion was meant to stand out.
You too can capture the luxurious and high-quality fashion of the colonial era with this 18th-century dress. Evoking the elegant style of famed colonial First Ladies including Abigail Adams, Martha Washington, and Dolly Madison, this burgundy velvet and sand-colored dress crafted from satin jacquard and velvet is the perfect piece to don when you’re revisiting America’s colonial days. Prestigious women throughout U.S. history, including our flag creator Betsy Ross and the well-known Schuyler sisters, donned this stylish colonial dress throughout the 1700s.
An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes collection of historical clothing, this colonial period dress is authentic to the fashion and style of 18th century America.
