Anne Bonny and Mary Read are without a doubt the two most famous female pirates in history, and it’s not just because of their gender. Both were remarkably courageous, skilled fighters and more than once put their male cohorts to shame. The two became legends in their own right, and Bonny in particular remains something of a mythological figure to this day, given the uncertainty surrounding her fate after her capture.
Anne Bonny’s last words to her imprisoned cohort and lover John “Calico Jack” Rackham, prior to his execution, were that she was “sorry to see you here, but if you’d fought like a man, you need not be hang’d like a dog.”
Here at Heritage Costumes, we have lovingly recreated two sets of women’s pirate costumes for both Anne Bonny (Brown) and Mary Read (Black). These costumes feature a black or brown velvet pirate frock coat with braided trim and large gold buttons, a contrasting burgundy waistcoat with gold buttons, black or brown pirate knickers (pants), and a black faux leather costume pirate belt.
