🌟 The Women Behind the Legacy

Florence Nightingale
Known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She established the world’s first secular nursing school and revolutionized hospital sanitation and patient care. International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birthday in recognition of her lasting impact.

Clara Barton
An ardent humanitarian, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross. She also broke barriers as the first woman to hold a senior clerkship in the U.S. federal government, earning equal pay with her male colleagues. Her dedication to battlefield medicine and disaster relief made her one of America’s most respected nurses.

Elizabeth Grace Neill
A pioneering nurse from New Zealand, Elizabeth Grace Neill advocated for formal nursing education and national registration. Her efforts led to New Zealand becoming the first country in the world to legally regulate nurses and midwives in 1901, setting a global standard for professional nursing.

Susie King Taylor
A formerly enslaved woman, Susie King Taylor became the first Black teacher for freed African Americans on St. Simons Island, Georgia. She later served as a nurse with the Union Army, caring for wounded soldiers and those suffering from disease—even when ordered not to. Her bravery and dedication made her a trailblazer in both education and military nursing.
