Many people assume that, throughout history, men’s fashion didn’t change very much. After all, today’s men have been wearing the very same shirts, jackets, coats, and even shoes as those of past eras, with only small details changing. But modern menswear actually got its start hundreds of years ago during the Victorian era.
The Victorian era (also referred to as the Edwardian era) set in motion so many fashion trends. Between the years of 1830 and 1910, Victorian men around the world adopted a new style of dress popular in the United Kingdom and every other area within the British Empire. Unlike years past, the years of the Victorian period saw huge changes in fashion. Thanks to the industrial revolution happening in England, clothing was suddenly available in mass quantities — and it was mass produced for the first time! New sewing machines allowed clothing to be made faster and more affordably, and new fashion magazines taught men the latest high fashion trends they needed to don.
For the first time, high-class and middle-class men could wear the very same fashions and styles. And starting in the 1840s, men’s clothing moved away from breeches, wigs, and decorated vests. Instead, the frock coat became the new norm. Every man wore a calf-length frock coat during this time period, acting as a formal piece of outwear perfect for any occasion. A predecessor to today’s three-piece suit, the Victorian frock coat was worn over a collared shirt and a waistcoat or vest. No man of any age, any class, or any profession went without his frock coat when leaving home.
