Life in the Thirteen Colonies was far from easy. America’s first settlers and colonists arrived on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean seeking refuge from the oppression of English rule—yet once they stepped on shore, the difficulties only multiplied. Colonists had to build their cities and towns from the ground up, facing unfamiliar terrain, weather, and Native Americans. Life in the New Worlds proved challenging thanks to the control Britain held over the colonies, too. From paying taxes on necessities to following the rules established by England’s government leaders, everything was constantly changing in the new America.
A typical colonial townsman spent his days working, whether handling important communications between England and the colonies or establishing his own business. The center of any colonial city or town was filled with action, and many townsmen during the 1700s spent their days interacting with other men, seeing and being seen in the city’s center.
