From the days of Abraham, sheep have abounded in the Holy Land and for centuries shepherds have been mainly dependent upon the sheep for a living.
The Jews of Bible times were first shepherds and then farmers, often the youngest boy in the family becomes the shepherd of the sheep. The dress of a shepherd lad is a simple tunic that is girded around his body by a shoulder girdle which at night was used as a blanket for warmth, topped off by his mantle (Head Piece) which was worn for protection from the sun.
